Distracted driving: More than what you probably think

Most people have heard of distracted driving, but many are unaware of the range it covers. Physical distractions are what people are most likely to recognize. These are an action that requires the driver to take one or both hands off the wheel. For example, holding a burger may occupy one hand, but extend to two when you need to rip open a sachet of mayonnaise to add to it.

Occasionally, a driver’s foot or leg could become the source of a physical distraction, rather than their hand. Such as if they try to change out of a skirt or shorts while still moving. That foot and leg will be unavailable to hit the brakes if needed.

Visual distractions are common

If anyone has ever told you to keep your eyes on the road, they likely thought you were visually distracted. If you are eyes on elsewhere, you cannot be looking out for danger on the road ahead as you should be. Elsewhere might be an attractive person on the sidewalk, a set of paper directions or a captivating video billboard.

Cognitive distractions can be difficult to manage

Ideally, you should be thinking only about the road and the traffic around you when driving. But many people’s minds wander off, leaving their ability to register and react to a hazard weakened. For some people, it is daydreaming that cognitively distracts them, for others, it is a hands-free phone call, a sales meeting, a chat with their passenger, the lyrics to the song or a host of other possibilities.

As you can probably see, it can be pretty hard to get through the whole journey without getting distracted. Therefore, if another driver injures you in a collision, it is always worth considering whether they got distracted in some way. In all situations, legal guidance could help you to get the compensation you deserve.
